It can be quite confusing to code a new garage door opener, especially if you've never had to do it before. Most often, this doesn't take very long, but most people still need instructions before configuring a new garage door remote. This is usually only necessary when moving into a new house, and the old owners had accidentally taken the garage door opener when they left.

The Marantec M3-2312 is probably one of the most commonly confusing types of garage door remotes to code. It just works a bit differently than other garage door openers. As it turns out, it's a very quick process, and is the same for the Marantec M3-3313 and most other Marantec remotes.

To configure a new Marantec M3-2312 or Marantec M3-3313, first you must locate the motor head and have your new remote in hand. Next, flip open the lip on the motor head and notice the circle of lights with three buttons. Hold down the button labeled "P" until it lights up. After it lights up, push and release that button until the number seven light is blinking. Once the number seven light is blinking, you can push the button on the remote. Let go of that button and press the "P" button on the motor head one more time, and you've just coded your brand new Marantec M3-2312.

LiftMaster 371LM remotes blow all other models out of the water with their simplicity and pricing. I am definitely a fan of the single button remote. It's one button to open, and the same one to close. That certainly makes my life easier when it's dark or if I'm tired. I don't ever have to worry about fumbling with the LiftMaster 971LM remote. I can just push the button and drive my car into the garage, and then push the button again to close the door and head inside without thinking about anything.

On the other hand, the Allstar Classic 318 MHz is equally as impressive in its own ways. It has three buttons, so it's a bit more complicated than the LiftMaster 371LM or the LiftMaster 971LM. But it definitely compares in quality, and competes in price. The Allstar Classic is one of the least expensive garage door remotes out there.

I guess it really depends on your preferences. Is simplicity more important than price? I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that all three of these garage door openers have their own unique qualities that aren't necessarily better or worse than any others. Most likely, though, the final decision will come down to compatibility with your current garage door opener.

With all this talk of moving (of course I'm still thinking about moving!), I've been thinking about how nice it might be to be able to design my own home. Of course, I barely have enough money to rent a home. But certainly if I could afford a Flagstaff contractor, I'd definitely hire one.

Until now, I hadn't really thought about things I would like to have in an ideal home. But since I have to move, I've been thinking about all of the Flagstaff construction that I've seen lately. As it turns out, Flagstaff builders are still in business, and doing everything from additions to remodeling.

I wish I could hire some Flagstaff builders to build my dream home. If I had all the money I could want to spend on a house, there are a few things I'd make sure to include in my new home. Certainly, I'd have a large open kitchen, that expands into a dining room, separated by a high breakfast bar. From the kitchen/dining room area, I'd love to have that open up into a large living room with hardwood floors and a fireplace.

I'd love to include large windows all over my house, to let the natural lighting flood every room of my home. Of course, I'd consult with my Flagstaff contractor on how the windows will affect heating costs in the winter. I don't know much about those sorts of things, so having a professional opinion from a Flagstaff construction company would be essential.

Of course, this is only a dream. Maybe one day I will have enough money to hire a Flagstaff contractor to build my fantasy home. Until then, I'll be completely satisfied living in a rental home in the most beautiful mountain town I've ever seen.

A few months ago I took a cross country road trip in search of a new home. I drove from PA to WA, and down the coast of CA into southern AZ. When I arrived in Tucson it was incredibly windy. The dust was blowing, and every time we opened the car doors, dust would blow into the car. Because we were on the road, we would just step on the dirt instead of shaking out the mats, grinding it into the floor.

At the time I didn't think much of it. I was looking for a website that was laid out beautifully, but in such a way that someone shopping for a Grand Canyon white water rafting adventure would get quick clear information about scheduling options, availability and prices.

Most people who are serious about pursuing a Colorado River Running trip through the Grand Canyon are already stirred by this stunning Wonder of the World. Maybe they've hiked it or just enjoyed the countless stunning photographs that are readily available on their coffee table or the internet. Shoppers for this once in a lifetime investment are looking for their options, prices, schedules, and availabilities.

A Grand Canyon white water rafting company website needs to include a few photos of people-filled boats crashing through Crystal rapid or Lava Falls rapid, and maybe a couple of breathtaking grottos and waterfalls. I retired after a 27 year long career as a clinical social worker in 2007. I was enjoying a part time job at TrailsWeb interviewing local small business owners and writing copy for the development of their websites.

I sensed that Flagstaff small business owners had confidence and pride in their accomplishments. I also believe in small businesses, especially in towns like Flagstaff. They are what create this town's unique character.

I paid attention to my experience and decided that I wanted to be a small business owner in downtown Flagstaff.

My criteria for creating a Flagstaff business here was five fold. My business would:

Be "Flagstaff-centric" without franchise fees or inventory bought from outside the community.

Meet a currently unmet need or niche.

Be recession friendly, especially for starving students, growing families, etc.

Be green.

Promote healthy joy and participation in our community's life.

I was volunteering at Flagstaff Middle School when a friend and mother of four blurted out, "Not having a 'Play It Again Sports' in town is killing me. I just spent $600 at Big 5 for one sports season and I'm not even done getting everything they need". I felt a "pop" in my brain and Flagstaff Uniform & Sports Exchange was born. I came up with the name because I like the acronym, F.U.S.E. . I think is implies coming together.

I began collecting inventory at moving sales and thrift stores. I found some amazing cleats, shin guards, soccer balls, baseball and softball bats, mitts, balls of all kinds and was able to sell them for 50 to 90% less than retail.

I was inspired by the "Play It Again Sports" and the "Bookman's" concept of offering trade credit or cash for good inventory that people brought to me. (I now get a truckload of cool stuff almost every day. Thanks everybody!

I recruited my friend and mother of three active kids, Kristin Brown and we set up a huge tent and held "sales events" in the parking lot of the Flagstaff Athletic Clubs, both eastside and west through the summer.

In early August, I drove by 19 W. Aspen, a beautiful building right on the corner of Aspen and Beaver, next door to the Orpheum Theatre. I spun around the block, parked and pressed my nose on the glass of the vacant building. It had been Odegaard's Sewing Center. I knew Van Odegaard built and owned the building. His business outgrew the space, so he moved to 2107 4th street right before the recession hit. It had been empty for a year.

I wrote Van a proposal to keep his building on the commercial real estate market but allow me to move Flagstaff Uniform & Sports Exchange into the building for a fraction of the rent plus a percentage of my gross income. He accepted my proposal. I'm so grateful. F.U.S.E. has been there two months now.

The community has responded enthusiastically to F.U.S.E.. Without fail, every customer has commented about how badly Flagstaff needed this kind of store and how wonderful my inventory is.

In response to feedback from customers, we also carry medical scrubs, camping gear, martial arts and wrestling gear, and we recycle Flagstaff Middle School logo clothes as well as offer new items printed by Claudia at Cheap Clothes and Shirt Co. We have been asked to recycle logo clothes for all the FUSD middle schools.

I also continue to write copy for small business websites at TrailsWeb. I'm crazy busy but I can't tear myself away from TrailsWeb. It's the friendliest, funnest workplace I've ever experienced.

Showtime Dirt Works, one of Pine Canyon's most popular landscape designers, has just set up their new website: www.ShowtimeDirtWorks.com.

Their site highlights their water features, xeriscaping, outdoor living environments (like outdoor kitchen areas). With lots of pictures and descriptions of their landscaping services, you can find out a whole lot about Showtime from their new website.

With an eye on luxury, TrailsWeb set out to create a website which would help them maintain their sterling appearance while garnering new business from the internet.

Flagstaff Uniform & Sports Exchange (F.U.S.E.) is our hometown clearinghouse for gently used Sports Gear and School Uniforms.

F.U.S.E. is the brain child of our content author Kathryn Peterson. She was volunteering at her daughter's middle school recently. Another volunteer and mother of four was bemoaning the fact that there was no used sporting goods outlets in town. She immediately realized that this is a business idea she could commit to.

Not only does F.U.S.E. support the important trend to recycle and re-use, F.U.S.E. helps families save money and keeps revenue in the community that would otherwise leave the community to go to big box store corporate headquarters. "I just love everything about this business!" Ms. Peterson said.

Currently Kathryn and her business partner Kristin Brown are holding a Drop-Off drive to build inventory. It works like this:

Clean your closets and garages of used sporting goods that are outgrown or lightly used and still usable.
Bring them to Uptown Billiards at 114 N. Leroux St. in the heart of downtown Flagstaff. (If you turn on your blinkers, you can park in the alley adjacent to Uptown long enough to unload your stuff.) The drop-off center is in the back by the restrooms. Leave your stuff and fill out a form listing what you are leaving for F.U.S.E. We will create a trade voucher based upon the items you dropped off.
Come to our sales event in the parking lot of the Flagstaff Athletic Club West at 1200 W. Rt. 66 on June 6th and twice a month thereafter. Your trade voucher will be there waiting for you!
If you can't make the event, just call me Kathryn Peterson at (928) 853-2414. I will have our entire inventory on the data base by then acan pick up your used items and bring you the items you need anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. as well as update your trade voucher account instantly!

We accept all kinds of sporting goods, water toys, and uniforms, but will be focusing our inventory on children's team sports like soccer and baseball.

After four weeks in the making, the new site for Gene's Western Wear is online! Gene's Western Wear is Flagstaff's most genuine dealer in cowboy boots, work wear and a whole lot more.

Check out their new site, http://www.geneswesternwear.com/ to see what they've got going on. TrailsWeb took all the pictures you see on the site of the store. A few of the photos were provided by the manufacturers of some of the jeans they sell. We wrote all the text for the site, and did a ton of SEO work to make sure it'll get plenty of traffic.

We designed it all from scratch, and put some real effort into how the text and images align with each other and the framing of the pages.

After a bit of back-and-forth with the company that made Gene's previous, anemic website, we were able to get their old domain and have it point to the new site. We registered geneswesternwear.com for our client, but their old domain, geneswesternwear.net is listed in a bunch of different places and it was important to salvage it.

TrailsWeb will, as always, be in touch with Gene's from time to time to make sure the site is doing its job and find out what needs to be updated from time to time.

Gary Anderson was interested in setting up an online store, and I recommended we put together the site first, get some traffic flowing through that, and then build a store on top of the already popular website. That way we have a bunch of traffic already headed to the store before we spend the development money to build a store. The opposite would've been to build a store then try to get the traffic to it, having already paid out the cash for development. Unless there's a unique market condition where you'd want to preempt the competition, it's usually a good idea to start at the beginning and develop your internet presence on an as-needed basis.
